Visual Plots 04/15/2014 Guidelines for all Graphs  Title Labeled axes No abbreviations Meaningful term Units of measurement Axes go to zero or // (show that it doesn’t go to zero) Shades of gray (not colors) No chart junk  Choosing the Right Graph Two or more nominal IVs and one scale DV ▯ Bar Graph Ex. DV mean clinician rating of severity and IV condition (education, exposure, control) 1 scale variable ▯ histogram Ex. DV frequency and IV math SAT score 2 scale variables ▯ frequency polygon or line graph Relation between or how one depends on other Ex. DV time 1 and IV time 2 Pie Charts A graph in the shape of a circle with a slice for every category The size of the slice represent the proportion of each category  Not common in psychology (not very professional) Pictorial Graph Bars are replaced by images which describe what bars represent Pictures are often distorted to show equality within bars (need proper scaling) Not professional Stem and Leaf  Shows frequency with which certain classes of numbers occur Alternative to a histogram so that raw data is not lost (using data from grouped frequency table)  Vertical line separates “stems” from “leaves” (tens | ones) Steps Order raw data from smallest to largest Decide what the stem and leaves will represent  Last digit versus all other digits Place value (10s, 100s, etc.) Place all stems to the left and leaves to the right of the line Use repeated data If no data – include range Negative numbers – negative goes on stem side Can be double sided (tens go in middle and ones go to left and right) Box and Whiskers 5­number summaries Shows minimum, lower quartile, median, upper quartile, maximum, and outliers Displays differences in populations Denotes dispersion and skewness Whiskers 1.5 IQ
