COM 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Individualism
Document Summary
Using the knowledge of what a culture values you can interpret important clues about how to adapt your communication style. There are five dimensions of cultural values listed below: Individualism vs. collectivistic the individual group (us) have learned to value their own interests over those of the group, expect freedom, and encourages performance based rewards. On the other hand, collectivists (japan) learn to value the interests of their group or community more than their individual interests. Centralized power decentralized power structures value equal input from the group (australia, new zealand, denmark) and strive for minimal power differences between authorities. The opposite is true for centralized, it values the voice of one over that of the group. Acceptance of uncertainty vs, preference for certainty this represents how comfortable a culture is with predictability, will they expect stability or go with the flow.
