Learning objectives: describe listening problems and their solutions, describe different ways of responding effectively to others, describe the five stages of active listening, express the importance of listening skills, review the different ways of effective responses. The principle of this chapter is listening and responding respectfully to others. Effective leaders not only listen to others but they respond to them effectively to fully understand their message. Hearing the physiological process of decoding sounds by deciphering soundwaves with our ears. Listening the process of receiving, constructing meaning from, and responding to verbal and nonverbal messages, we not only decode them but we assign meaning to them. We spend a third of our time on the job listening, we don"t use that time well. One day later 50% of information retained.
