Document Summary

Ways of being= root possibilities* what"s possible in the broadest possible sense restricted only in the fact that it can"t contradict itself. Being in what is possible has a much wider scope than being in what is actual. A power to start with nothing but root possibilities. A power to make things exist (3) whatever has the possibilities to make things exist also has the ability to select the things that exist. Capable, but also capable of choosing implies that the being that has this power is intelligent and free. Such a being we call god (acc. to aquinas) We want to go beyond our experience to see why things exist at all. Conclusions come only because we have traveled to our limit of understanding. We have arrived at the idea that the world as a whole may require a cause. A necessary being would have to be a being that is not simply one possibility among many.
