3400:210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Contrapposto
Document Summary
Archaic hellenic-stiff, very serious, what the human form should be. Contrapposto stance-hip shoved out to one side, relaxed. Sculpture-looks like it is always moving, not stiff, more realistic, what humans actually. Roman art-more practical, meant for political use, no contrapposto. Archi-a lot of arches, used concrete, (coliseum) storytelling of battles and generals. Perfect geometrical shape used to reflect perfect nature of god. More symbolic of god and afterlife, not realism as the human eye sees it. Islamic art- calligraphy on walls, doesn"t have pictures of god"s creation. Church design is a shape of a cross. Sculpture-built into building, no free form, all carved into walls. Flying buttresses, stained glass windows, thinner walls, pointy, tall, dark looking, rose. Archi-combo of everything thus far (greek, hellenic, gothic, romanesque)
