Document Summary

Bsc 300 lecture 4- how the cell is powered. The laws of thermodynamics and the concept of entropy. Energy- capacity to do work, or the capacity to change or move something. Thermodynamics- the study of the changes in energy that accompany events in the universe. Bioenergetics- the study of the energy transformations that occur in living organisms. The first law of thermodynamics- the law of conservation of energy. Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only transduced. Transduction- conversion of energy from one form to another. Cells transduce energy from one storage form to another and ultimately to power cellular processes. Chemical energy is stored in various biological molecules (glycogen, atp) The universe can be divided into system and surroundings. The system is a subset of the universe under study. The surroundings are everything that is not part of the system.
