Located between the outer membrane and the peptidoglycan layer. Originate from insertion pores at both ends of the bacteria. Differing numbers according to genus and species: pallidum has 3 filaments originating at each end. Wind around the bacteria in the periplasmic space. The order spirochaetales has four families and 14 genera, of which 3 are human pathogens (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) Never grown in laboratory culture w/o host cells. Slow doubling time in cell culture (about 30 hours) Considered to be strict anaerobes (no genes for catalase or sod) although it is now known that they can use glucose oxidatively (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) Three are considered important: bejel, yaws, pinta. Secondary lesions: include oral papules and mucosal patches. Late: gummas (granulomas) of skin, bones & nasopharyx.
