Document Summary

Any fiber derived by a process of manufacture from a substance that at any point is not a fiber. Co(cid:374)verti(cid:374)g (cid:373)aterial i(cid:374)to fi(cid:271)er for(cid:373) is (cid:272)alled (cid:862)spi(cid:374)(cid:374)i(cid:374)g(cid:863) Starting material is a polymer, either supplied by nature, or manufactured from petrochemicals. Polymer is made into a viscous fluid, either by application of heat (melting), or by use of a solvent for the material (dissolving) The spinning solution is referred to as dope. Extrusion- through spinneret to form fiber: melting/dissolving, preparing solution, hardening: cooling/evaporation/precipitation, drawing (optional) Extrusion viscous fluid is forced through a spinneret, and fiber formation occurs. Spinneret nozzle, each hole forms one fiber: methods of manufacturing fibers. There are three principal types of fiber spinning: melting spinning: molten polymer is forced through the spinneret into air; fiber forms by freezing (cooling) Spinning coagulation (solvent: melt spinning requires high temperatures but is cleaner, and is the preferred process.
