Document Summary

Types of hearing loss: conductive, sensorineural, mixed. Conductive: outer & middle ear, typically not permanent, impacts hearing, typically doesn"t cause total loss of hearing, prevents low-to-moderate intensity sounds from being heard at all, possible causes: Malformation of the outer ear, ear canal, or middle ear. Disorder of the outer ear: microtia. Malformed pinna that doesn"t result in loss of hearing sensitivity by itself: atresia. Complete closure of the auditory canal: stenosis. Does not result in healing loss unless debris or cerumen becomes trapped: frequency occurs with craniofacial disorders, impacted cerumen or foreign object are common causes. Cerumen protects the ear from foreign bodies and traps dirt and debris, Disorders of the middle ear: otosclerosis: The replacement of healthy bone with spongy bone in the area of the stapes footplate: otitis media: Inflammation of the mucous membrane lining of the middle ear cavity results from eustachian tube dysfunction. Negative middle ear pressure causes eardrum to retract.
