Cj 280 - lecture 13: obtrusive data gathering techniques. Can collect large amounts of information with reasonable expense. Can distribute by mail, on-line, etc. (it"s easy. People have to be able to read and write. Must be willing to cooperate with researcher"s request. May not get enough people to respond (low response rate) What is the meaning of life and the respondent explains it written out. But, lower response rate (having to write more = less likely to do it) Use one that someone else has constructed. If it has been previously tested, responses may be more valid. Or, you may want to construct your own. Control variables (ever been a victim of a crime?) Personal and/or sensitive questions toward the end (his personal opinion) Fixed or open ended or a combination. Very critical, need to make sure there is only one meaning. When fixed is used, categories must be: Mutually exclusive - only one response is appropriate.
