When attempting to understand, predict, and control any social problem, including the crime problem, the first step is to determine its extent. 3 categories of major crime data sources in the us: Most widely used source to measure criminal behavior. Limitation: completely voluntary; police agencies don"t have to report their data. Has information that isn"t in the ucr. Asks individuals if they"ve been victims of crime. Bi-annual basis and sent to households for people to self-report. Limitation: honestly, it doesn"t include commercial crimes, members of homeless population are not included, lack of knowledge on which crime you were a victim of (murder in the first, misdemeanor, etc. ) This is about crime itself (not victimization like ucr) All of what has to do with juveniles comes from this. Limitations: people can lie, forget, not always accurate, etc. African american males at most risks (2014 - 15% of the population and 51. ^% of all homicide victims)
