Loyalty to the monarchy was very important, didn"t want to reject britain but wanted to be treated fairly like british citizens. Sizeable portion of americans felt like the only way to get what they want was to break away from the monarchy. People had to give power to the government so they could govern the people. Also viewed it as a possibly destructive force, tempting. Government had to be watched to make sure it wasn"t being corrupted by power. Liberty had to be defended from power. Americans believed that they had a special role to play as defenders of liberty. Colonies was a place where people had a special strength of purpose. Would fight power and corruption and freedom. Believed their liberties were protected better than anyone else in the world thanks to an idea called the british constitution .
