Document Summary

4/4/17- reforming america: the origins of reform. The radical individual: making heaven on earth. People realized that progress came at a price, such as ruthless economic competition and much more individualistic. Prostitution and alcoholism was growing, especially in urban areas. Just in the 1830"s, the crime rate quadrupled and more then 100 riots. Religious revivals that swept through the country also contributed to this reform. The first organized feminist movement was also key to reform, women being the core of support in many reform groups. Still blocked from leadership positions and any real power. First women"s rights convention, held in upstate new york. Wrote that basically women were oppressed and denied freedom because they were seen to be dependent . Started a trend with conventions like this in many states. Because it was so radical, the movement didn"t get very far. An attitude that mocked men and women who had sexual relations outside of society.
