History and development: media in the colonies. Printing press was rst used in the colonies in 1638: not everyone could read, mostly upper class. Newspapers did not have a mass-appeal as they do now: more politically charged so not a mass appeal to a wide audience, development. Penny press newspaper: appealed to a larger audience, used by ben franklin. Private ownership of broadcast news: can decide what they share, money, but regulation by the government. Compare pbs to bbc: pbs = public education, not a lot of news. National news broadcasts in the usa: cbs and nbc started nightly broadcasts in 1963. Fox does not have a nightly broadcast: cbs started 60 minutes in 1968. Most popular newsmagazine on the air since its inception: abc"s nightline grew out of coverage of the 1979-80 iran hostage crisis. Wednesday, september 6, 2017: c-span started in 1979, cnn started in 1980, along with this growth in tv, media itself had grown.
