A war that happens within a state. Most commonly: number of deaths: a widely-accepted threshold is 25 deaths in a year. Civil wars happen more frequently than wars between states: 102 states (about half the states in the world) have experienced civil wars between 1946-2011. Loss of human life: over 5 million people from 1990-2000. Human rights issues: violence against and sexual exploitation of women, child labor/ child soldiers. Human displacement: 15 million refugees worldwide. Wars over government control: parties fighting to control the entire country. Secessionist/ autonomy: one party fighting the government to govern themselves independently.
