Luhrmann talks about problem of presence: how to make the invisible and immaterial being (jesus christ, god, holy. Spirit) present and perceivable to the human mind. Luhrmann says humans these non-presence things are hard for humans because humans want things to be present and perceivable. This is something that people cope with to better communicate with divine things. Holy communion: practiced different across denominations because they communicate with god differently with different traditions, they think how to manifest the divine in different ways. Luhrmann talks about the problem of discernment: the ability to distinguish the entities of your interest from others that are not. Luhrmann says people must learn this to be experienced. First standard: whether it was something that you could have thought anyway. When something pop into your mind then you are more likely to believe it came from god. It is something that god is likely to say. Third standard: confirmation with other people, cross checking.
