Bio 200_ evolutionary biology -lecture 1: time scales and origin of life. Before the birth of the solar system there was a large rotating cloud of dust,rocks, and gases. This cloud is called the protoplanetary disk. Within the disk there was hydrogen, helium and other heavier elements created by supernovas. About 4. 6 bya a star was at the center and the death of this star led to a shock wave being sent through the disk. Most of the mass was the concentration of heavier elements in the middle. This mass concentration being smashed together allowed it to heat up; the precursor to our sun. The other material outside the center in the rings led to protoplanets. The nuclear fusion of helium and hydrogen (triggered by the central mass of the disk) The rings were destined to become different planets. Gravity allowed objects not in the center to separate into rings. About 150 million km from the sun.
