Document Summary

Bio 200_evolutionary biology-lecture 11: vertebrates: fish, reptiles, birds, and. A part that looks similar in all vertebrates. Defined as an anterior skull that contains the brain. The skull is made of bone and cartilage. Contains three sensory systems: eyes, nose, and ears. The vertebrae is made of cartilage or bone. This connect the brain to the rest of the body and to be in continuous communication. This structure is advantageous over chitin because it is strong without being brittle and grows with the organism. Contains all internal organs such as lungs, liver, kidneys, and stomach. Also contains the endocrine glands which are hormones that regulate the body functions. One of those internal organs is a muscular heart that powers an advanced circulatory systems. This is an important trait for organisms that are large. The sister taxa to the vertebrates are the tunicates. Some say they are not our sister taxa because they are not quite members of the vertebrate tree.
