Prevent cell mixing and organism from falling apart. Specialized, polarized cells that form a boundary between organism and outside world. Barrier between stuff you"re trying to get rid off and bloodstream. Held together by tight junctions nearly impenetrable barrier. Proteins making up ecm are constitutively secreted. Similar to cell adhesion molecules bind to proteins on ecm. Most abundant proteins in mammals (25-35% of protein) Spend a lot of time in golgi before secretion. Large, polar surface area attracts h2o and other molecules cushioning.
