Document Summary

Bacteria are basically reproduction machines and usually only stop proliferating if starving (no atp) Proliferation in eukaryotes: the cell cycle : signal, growth factors (usually, replication of dna, growth, mitosis and cytokinesis, mitosis - segregation of chromosomes. Proliferation is more complex in eukaryotic cells than bacteria because of things that have to happen during 1, 2, and 4. Dna is not condensed and therefore not visible. Appears as if nothing is happening (g1, s, and g2) since decondensed chromosomes can"t take up stain. Can only see dna during m phase. In the spring, the female frog secretes progesterone. Causes oocytes (egg precursor cells) to mature and be released for fertilization. Cells are arrested in g2 until hormone progesterone signals oocytes to divide. Replication meiosis i meiosis ii. Meiosis is involved in replication of germ cells (egg/sperm) 1 chromosome of each type from each parent. Granddaughter cells are haploid (half of parent # of chromosomes)
