Stech – Conversation Units of Analysis:  ­Act: the smallest unit; a single, complete thought  ­Turn: a sequence of consecutive acts by one person before the other person  begins to speak ­Topic Sequence: a sequence of turns all on the same topic (semantic – content)  *we will focus on acts/turns – syntax Types of Acts:  ­Questions: can be either open: a question open to any response or closed: a  question that demands a yes or no answer (doesn’t mean it will actually be given)  ­Agreements/Disagreements  ­Statements: anything else/miscellaneous   Conversation as a string of symbols representing the acts:  Ex: SS – O – S – AAAC – DSSS  ­A turn is ungrammatical if any of its turns (in composition or transition) do not follow  the rules  Rules for Turn Composition:  *see handout from UBlearns  1.
