April 1970 - usa celebrates first earth day. Enacted 1963 - 1970 amendments national ambient air quality standards (naaqs) - set maximum limits of pollutants in outside air. Extended deadline for achieving naaqs for ozone. Cwa - 1972 & amended in 1977. Established the national pollutant discharge elimination system (npdes) Prohibits discharge of pollutants from point sources. Provides citizens the right to bring a civil suit for cwa violations. Cwa prohibits the discharge of oil or hazardous substance in harmful quantities. Regulates unreasonable risk chemicals and substances (pcbs and asbestos) Tsca seeks to control hazardous inputs into commerce & industry rather than byproducts from manufacturing processes. Tsca lists all chemical substances manufactured or in use in the usa. Notice is given in a pre-manufacture notice (pmn) that includes data and test results regarding chemicals.
