Also spoken by significant numbers of recent immigrants to the u. s from haiti/haitian. Vast majority of french speakers in the u. s did not come here directly from europe. Most came from parts of canada/places that are now part of canada. Geographic concentration: new england (especially maine, but also new hampshire and some towns in massachusetts) About 117,000 french or creole speakers in louisiana in 2012 (census est. ) They are descendants of settlers from colonial times (louisiana was a french/spanish colony purchased by u. s in 1803)
