Language is a system of rules that allows speakers to construct messages encoded as sequences of sounds, symbols or gestures. Meaning combination:i have a red pen (body or ink?) Semantic resolution:tom loves his wife, i do too. Phonetics:the study of speech sounds, including production and perception (ch. 2) Phonology:abstract organization of speech sounds and interaction (ch. 3) An expression isgrammatical(in a given language) if it satisfies the rules. Meaning of word is not predictable from its form. Languages have words with same meanings and different sounds. And words with same sounds and different meanings. Don"t need to know every word, just the basic building blocks. Critical period: biological window of opportunity to learn language. Adults do not have this kind of learning capacity.
