Description
COLOR TERMINOLOGIES(VIII) ▯ Agrillo & Roberson (2009)(revisiting B & L, 1954) claim that focal colors are not more memorable. ▯ They are, not easily perceivable under all circumstances, BUT are communicated faster and with fewer words ▯ Evidence points toward constraints in color terminologies that can’t be explained in linguistic terms ▯ But require reference to the vision faculty and higher cognitive processing of colors. MESOSPACE(I) ▯ “Spatial Language and Cognition in MesoAmerica” ▯ Project headed by J. Bohnemeyer (NSF grant #BCS-0723694) ▯ Investigates spatial semantics in 15 languages of MesoAmerica MESOSPACE(II) ▯ Space and location are basic to cognitive architecture ▯ Specification of shapes, objects, dimensions, relations (Jackendoff, 1996) ▯ Also location and path/trayedctory ○ E.g. The bin is near the door ○ E.g. The arrow flew past my head ▯ Usage of “frames of reference” MESOSPACE(III) ▯ (frequent) Usage of meronyms for object parts and spatial regions (e.g. in Zapotec) ▯ Tasks: ○ Ball & Chair ○ Object part-naming ○ Talking Animals ○ New Animals MESOSPACE(IV) ▯ Frame of reference is a conceptual coordinate system used to define orientation-dependent place functions (Jackendoff, 1983) ▯ Levinson (1996) distinguishes: ○ Intrinsic FoR, e.g. The ball is behind the chair ○ Relative FoR, e.g. The ball is in front of the chair ○ Absolute FoR, e.g. The ball is East of the chair MESOSPACE(V) ▯ Talking Animals (LINGUISTIC) task ▯ An array of animals is presented to the director ▯ He/she has to verbally explain it to the builder for reconstruction ▯ We analyze the FoR used by both in the task MESOSPACE(VI) ▯ New Animals (NON-LINGUISTIC) task ▯ An array of animals in front of the participant ▯ He or she rotates 90 degrees and reproduces configuration ▯ We analyze the recall of spatial arrays through the FoR displayed MESOSPACE(VII) ▯ One of the hypothesis: ○ Whether the recurrent use of meronyms has an impact on choice of FoR ▯ Prediction: Languages with extensive use of meronyms will tend to use intrinsic/absolutive FoR and disfavor relative FoR (true for Yucatec Maya) ▯ Other research questions: ○ What factors (e.g. language, geography, age, literacy level) will affect the choice of FoR significantly? MESOSPACE(IX) ▯ EXERCISE:
