Torts: a violation of a duty imposed by the civil law. A surgeon who removes the wrong kidney from a patient commits a different kind of tort, called negligence. Torts from two other areas of law: criminal law and contract law. In a tort case, it is up to the injured party to seek compensation. A tort is also different from a contract dispute. A contract case is based on an agreement two people have already made. Intentional torts: harm caused by a deliberate action.
