PSC 436 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Environmental Protection, Social Class
Document Summary
Class is important, esp. as new middle class has emerged. Voters are linked to social groups, which are then linked to political parties. Voters make decisions more on their interests and values. Social groups represent different interests (class or religion, for example) Orient voters to parties by giving cues, gives a shortcut in making voting decisions. Social class is the essence of old politics. Class voting is decreasing: growth of new middle class, weakened link between individuals and class groups, narrowing in life conditions, and social and occupational mobility. Established parties hesitate to identify themselves with new politics issues.
