Elaboration likelihood model: suggests 2 ways that people attempt to persuade others: central route: logical, organized, and on topic approach, effective when target is paying attention, knows about topic, or has an interest in the outcome of the situation, peripheral route: appeal to irrelevant or extraneous features of the situation (ex: physical attractiveness of audience), effective when target is not paying attention or does not have ability or motivation to analyze what the communicator is relaying; prevalent most in advertising and politics.
