Document Summary
Clinical assessment: the systematic evaluation and measurement of psychological difficulties of an individual. Diagnosis: process of determining whether a particular problem meets the criteria for a psychological disorder. Classical categorical approach: one set of criteria per disorder, you either have it or you don"t. Dimensional approach: various criteria are rated on a scale (1-10, creates a profile (mmpi, millon multiaxial) Prototypical approach dsm-5: some prototypical criteria and a number of others ( chinese menu method) This manual describes a widely used classification to diagnose mental disorders. Comorbidity: when people who meet criteria for one disorder also meet criteria for another. Presence of comorbidity could: represent important relationships between well-validated disorders, be the result of poorly defined syndromes. Alternative to the dsm: nimh and the rdoc. Moving away from symptom based diagnosis: looking at biological/neurological markers, not starting from any current diagnosis, multiple dimensions/perspectives, dimensional approach vs strictly categorical. Can catch too many people, like the wanted and the unwanted.
