Cultural definitions of drug use: use of some drugs (i. e. heroin and crack) is condemned, other drugs (alcohol and tobacco) are tolerated and even encouraged, opium and morphine used as medicine in 1800s and early 1900s. In u. s. society, taking hallucinogens such as lsd or smoking marijuana is bad but social drug use such as smoking and/or using alcohol is okay. In the netherlands, marijuana and other drugs are okay. Changing views of alcohol: alcohol was important in colonial america. Immigration changed public view of alcohol, leading to the temperance. Movement: prohibition gave organized crime syndicates more wealth and power than before, 1933: 21st amendment ended prohibition.
