Document Summary
Representation : the production of meaning through language -hall. Reflective approach : language reflects or mirrors reality. Intentional approach : language expresses what the enunciator wishes to convey. Each culture will interpret the message differently. Constructive approach : meaning is constructed in and through language. Language depends on social structures as well as the individual. Signifier = individual/thing that gives meaning to the thing. Signified = the material/structure of the thing. There is no natural or inevitable link between the signifier and the signified . People produce meaning dividing signifiers into different categories. Langue : the language system can be studied with precision through science. Ceci n"est pas une pipe slide shows picture of a pipe. It is just a picture of one not a physical one. Must study the culture as well as the social structures that underlie it. Cultural practices work and can be studied similarly to language. Denotation : descriptive level, common sense meaning.
