Document Summary

Racism, competition, etc. as a result of globalization. Hybridity, yet they have something that is very distinct to the indigenous culture. Globalization emerging as the mixing of races: economic merge and developing middle class. Transitional novel so you expect the effects of globalization to be transitional as well. Indigenous customs with toloki, figurines, parodies of white culture (interior decoration of house in shanty towns) Increasing violence of black against black: you see this in tsotsi as well. Irony: there are more ways of dying than living in the future, funerals are the only thing that bring dignity to those living in the shanty town. Religious and cultural ceremony: flea circus. A guy is mimicking the entrepreneurship of the whites, has a great gig as a professional mourner, and yet plays with his flea circus. Irony is that nef and toloki profit from the misfortune and death of other people and their cultures.
