The army as the guardian and the founder of the nation-state. Ruler but not governor- 4 different military coups, army was not interested in seizing power, disposed the president or prime minister and appointed a new one. The army as a secular modernizer!- modernization process was not appraised except for in turkey. The dominant role of the chp- peoples republican party, one of the strongest political party in turkey"s political history 1923-1944 it was the only governing party. First coup in 1960 came from the chp loosing power. Turning point: multiple turning points 1923, 2003, 2016. From the caliphate state to the republic (role of ataturk) 1st coup- killed the president- government changed by constitution, gave better representation by bicameral- 1961 presidential to parliamentary system- president no longer had the same power. 2nd coup- removed the second house of parliament.
