Document Summary
Alexander hamilton stephens was a representative and governor of georgia during the mid to late 1800"s, and was eventually elected as the vice president of the confederacy in 1861. He points out the positive aspects of the changes made from the union"s constitution and how the confederacy can benefit from said changes. Firstly, stephens argues how commerce should be conducted by discussing where appropriations should come from to facilitate improvements in certain areas. A town or city must be self- reliant to ensure the highest chance of succeeding in all facets of life. Secondly, stephens agrees with aspects of the british parliament that have to do with independence. Perhaps he implies that the american culture should adopt characteristics from the british because their independent way of life treated them well, and made them one of the greatest powers in the world.
