INAG 110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Thesis Statement, Infinitive
Document Summary
Inag lecture 6: determining general purpose, thesis, etc. The time you spend preparing your speech may be of little value if you do not determine what you want your speech to accomplish. How you conceive of each will help you clarify and narrow your topic. Once the general purpose is set for your speech, determine the specific purpose. This is the precise response you want from your audience. Specific purpose statements should be expressed as an infinitive phrase that includes the general purpose as well as the main thrust of your speech. 1. to inform the class of differences between the operations of an on-campus political club and an off-campus political party. 2. to persuade the student senate that requiring all college students to participate in service-learning projects benefits the student, college, and community. While the general and specific purpose statements set the goals for your speech, the thesis statement, or your core idea, focuses on what you want to say.
