Continuous spectra - the spectrum from a solid body that is emitting light. Absorption line spectra - what a gas cloud or other object absorbs. Emission line -the energy a gas cloud or other object emits. The detailed energy levels available to an atom depends on the element and its electrons. You can identify what elements are present based on the energy lines; how we know what far away objects are made of. Used to observe the amount of elements in stars and nebulae, and the temperature of astronomical objects (mostly stars) Spectral lines can also be used to measure the velocities of motion of astronomical objects. Chasing after the wave that you emit so you are pushing the wave together in front of you and stretching it out behind you.
