Jupiter is the 4th brightest object in the solar system. Only venus, the moon and the sun are brighter. The babylonians were the first to record their sightings of jupiter. This was in the 7th and 8th century bc. The greeks called it jupiter because it was the largest planet and zeus, also known as jupiter, was the most powerful god. Jupiter has the shortest day of any planet. It rotates so fast, the planet looks more like a doughnut that a sphere. Jupiter orbits the sun every 11. 8 years. It is so slow that from earth"s point of view, jupiter is standing still. The upper atmosphere of jupiter is divided into cloud belts and zones. They are made primarily of ammonia crystals, sulfur, and mixtures of the two compounds. The great red spot is actually a storm. It has been raging on for at least 350 years. It is so big 3 earths could fit inside it.
