AOSC 200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Downburst, Electric Potential, Leading Edge
Document Summary
The gulf stream transports heat from the tropics to northern europe. Antarctic bottom water formation occurs due to the surface water being cold and density to be sufficiently high to allow it to sink to great depths of the ocean. North atlantic deep water formation results from strong cooling and high salinity. After downwelling, this deep water moves south to the antarctic. Warming of the planet (ipcc 2013) framework. Low pressure over land, induced by the warmer air, causes surface convergence of air inland, where a line of thunderstorms often develops. Drier air is pulled into the cloud in a process called entrainment, which causes some evaporative cooling. Downdraft causes an outflow of cold air at the surface called a gust front. When a thunderstorm"s downdraft reaches the ground, the air spreads out forming a gust front. Gust front moves far enough out from the storm that it cuts off the inflow of warm, humid air.
