Document Summary

Fibrous joints: no synovial cavity, dense irregular connective tissue. Synovial joints: synovial cavity, dense irregular connective tissue, accessory ligament. More space between articulating bones than in sutures. Sheet of dense irregular connective tissue between two neighboring bones. Ex: epiphyseal growth plate, joint between sternum and first rib. Joint with broad, flat fibrocartilage disc between articulating bones. Synovial cavity: space between articulating bones, filled with synovial fluid. Articular cartilage: covers surfaces of the bones that have to slide past one another- allows for smooth and slippery surface. Ligaments: fibrous connective tissue, connect bones to other bones, encapsulates entire joint. Nerves and blood vessels: nerves detect pain, monitor joint position and stretch, capillary beds supply filtrate for synovial fluid. Made up of dense irregular connective tissue. Often has fat pads for added protection. Provides lubrication, absorbs shock, provides oxygen/nutrients to cartilage. For cushioning between fibrous layer of capsule and synovial membrane or bone.
