All program that perform specific tasks for users. Top-most level of the application is the user interface. Main function is to translate tasks and results to something the user can understand. Also moves and processes data between the two surrounding layers. Information is stored and retrieved from a database or file system. Info is then passed back to the logic tier for processing and back to user. Rules governing its word usage and punctuation. You have to be perfectly accurate when talking to a computer! The source code is a chicken which is put into the compiler (the oven) which produces the machine code (the cooked chicken) which is used in the runtime. Algorithm: an orderd sequence of unambiguous and well-defined instructions that performs some task and halts in finite time.
