Document Summary

The role of social media in civic participation. All parents know how teenagers cannot live with out their electronic gadgets. While this may be seen as a waste of time, the social media forums students use can help them become involved in the political world. In today"s society, twitter is a productive venue that helps citizens engage each other on political issues. This is because during presidential debates their opinions may not be heard, and twitter gives them a platform to speak up on. Adolescence can be arduous, especially when students transition from high school to college. In college they have a lot more freedom and can learn how to act proactively when they reach the voting age. At this time they have too many opinions, and few opportunities to express themselves, except through social media. Since the 2012 presidential debates, more accounts advocating for human rights, civil change and certain view points have been created.
