Evolution: 1940s= therapeutic counseling, probation officers like social workers, focus on rehabilitation. 60s: social services: helping find job/housing/ provide assistance, focus on self efficiency to decrease recidivism. 70s; risk management, focus on management, us today, looks at risk level to determine supervision. Recent laws let nonviolent offenders reduce 2/3 of supervised time if they follow the rules. This saves the system"s money, eases burden of caseloads, gives probation officers more time to handle other cases. Revocation: initial sentence put back in place after arrest or technical violation (depends on probation officer, miss conditions) Heavy case loads limit contact, recidivism rates lower, probation ppl are lower risk.
