Why so many communication theories: scholars have different assumptions about the nature of, communication, theory building and testing. Is communication a matter of choice? (communication is goal-oriented: communication is a matter of choice, or we are just acting in response to stimuli in our environment. Special type of rhetorician: critical scholars, goal to create social change. Judee burgoon in a communication model of personal space violations: No because of involuntary reactions based on the stigma of interruption; her experiment is providing a stimulus with positive or negative feedback with a violation of space. We can"t predict people"s behavior if they have choice in a matter. Social endeavor because people are working together to create meaning. One individual provides a stimulus and one provides a response-- testing to see how the individuals are going to respond to the same stimulus, looking for behavior patterns-- how the majority of individuals behave to the same stimulus.
