Early language experience: hart & risley (1995, 30 million word gap study, observation of children growing up in varying ses families in kansas. Tracked number of words kids were hearing. Result: child in professional family at age 4: 40 million words, child in working class family at age 4: 25 million, child in welfare family at age 4: 10 million words. Results in impossible game of catch-up for children in welfare families in order to develop similar language skills/vocabularies as children in higher ses.
