A short musical composition of words and music. Lyrics are the words that accompany songs. Chorus: repeated part of a song (aka refrain) A stanza of a song that is repeated. Refrain: repeated line or set of lines. Irony: when one thing is named or stated, but another is intended. Situational irony: discrepancy between appearance and reality. Grew up in milltown in new england. Popular poet in his time (roosevelt wrote a review) Syntax is not running from one stanza to the next. Point of view: person telling the story. Lonely, isolated when others placed him on a pedestal. Material wealth, but it may have meant nothing to him. Created an ideal human, but he turns out to be tragically human. Sense that the people are working for him. Juxtaposition between calm summer night and bullet through his head . Diction flattens out at the end and just gives us the info. 16 lines, last stanza has two voltas.
