Helps children cope with adversity: healthy, safe physical environment includes physical, chemical, and built environments. Safe neighborhoods and their associated social capital. Parent knowledge about age appropriate meal planning for young children. What undermines healthy development: toxic stress. Strong, frequent, and/or prolonged activation of the body"s stress response. Disrupted brain architecture, poorer stress response, increased the risk of stress-related disease. Modest gaps in achievement by income are present when children enter school and grow during the school years lower rates of high school completition and college attendance behavioral problems internalizing scared when getting called on.
