Concept of institutionalized retirement is fairly recent: agrarian/rural vs. industrialized/urban, medical advances. A model for successful aging: high cognitive and physical functioning, engagement with life, avoiding disease and disability. Productive aging activity that produces benefits for society: caregiving, volunteerism, contributing informally to family, neighborhood, community. Meaningful leisure: narrowing of activities and social circle, solitary and sedentary, doing nothing in particular , benefits, builds social support, creates personal meaning and being valued, enhances positive identity and promotes health q. Meaning and importance in late life: over the course, older women (social connectedness, cultural variations, benefits, lower prevalence of physical illness, longer life expectancy, lower rates of loneliness, lower prevalence of depression and anxiety. Civic engagement actively participating in the community through individual and collective activities associated with civic life: active lifestyle, address social problems, promote social justice. Underutilized social asset: older americans act of 2006.
