Organizations that run candidates for political office and coordinate the actions of officials elected under the party banner. Party organization: structure of national, state, and local parties, including party leaders and workers. Republicans have existed since 1985 and democrats since early 1800s. First parties were the federalists and the democratic-republicans. Federalists wanted a strong central government, national bank, assumption of state war debts by the national government. Democratic-republicans wanted concentrated power on the state level. Fifth party system born out of great depression. Move from fifth to sixth during separate but equal phase. A change in one of more of the party factors that define a party system. Begins with the emergence of a new question that within each party people differ in opinion. Page 267 for top priorities of parties. The role of political parties in american politics. Unified government: when one party holds majority in both. Sometimes can affect votes in swing states.
