But can one simply switch careers overnight: the prisoner"s dilemma, consider, you and another person have been arrested separately and are being held in separate cells; you cannot communicate with each other. You have two choices confess to your crime, thus defecting and not cooperating with the other prisoner; or not confess, staying silent and thus cooperating with the other. Each choice has different consequences based on what the other prisoner does: If both of you confess, you each get 2 years in prison. If you confess, but the other does not, you go free while the other gets 40 years. If you do not confess, but the other does, you get 40 years while the other goes free. If both the u. s. and china impose tariffs on each other"s goods, they will both get 2 units. If the u. s. imposes a tariff but china does not, the u. s. gains 15 units while china loses 1.
