Social contract an important moment in political history. Jr gives us a set of ideas that last until our present political discourse. Jr important for liberty, property, and equality (fraternity) Thinking more along lines of thomas payne. Ideals that exist out there that are absolute in terms of what they are. To renounce liberty is to renounce being a man . To not act in defense of civil rights. Jr tries to account for outliers - new ways of thinking about liberty. Chapter 6 - developing the theory of the social contract; a paradigm shift. Jl; sc applies to small number of people; people who own property. Th; sc accounts for sovereign taking power; no room for citizen participation. The way jr deals w/ social community. Offering concept of association that 1. didn"t deal with giving power to someone else and 2. thinking about power in regards to your own property.
